Blueberry Lemon Basil {Green} Smoothie

Green smoothies, I just LOVE ’em. I especially love them when they’re so freaking tasty you forget that they’re even good for you. I could literally drink this smoothie every single day. I don’t think it would ever get old.

When I picked up my CSA box this week I peaked inside and staring back at me was this vibrant bunch of lemon basil. It’s scent was so pleasantly overpowering it practically knocked me off my feet. Whoa, hey now, have you ever worked with lemon basil before? It’s kinda like my new favorite thing.

Now depending on where you live and what season it is, lemon basil could be hard to get your hands on. Keep your eyes out for this yummy goodness at your local farmers’ markets and roadside produce stands. If you can’t seem to get your hands on this magical herb, you can make this recipe with traditional, Italian basil and lemon zest, it’s equally as fantastic! Try subbing in a small handful of basil leaves + lemon zest {about 1 teaspoon should do}.

Now sip up!

Blueberry Lemon Basil {Green} Smoothie

{1 large smoothie, or two smaller portions}

  • 2 handfuls baby spinach
  • approximately 10 lemon basil leaves {or a handful of traditional basil + 1 tsp. lemon zest}
  • 1 1/2 cups blueberries
  • 1 banana, frozen is best
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • small handful of ice cubes

Place all of the ingredients in a blender; blend until smooth.

Sip, relax + enjoy!

    Lemon basil is easy to grow in a container garden or pot. It also makes excellent pesto! Great smoothie recipe. I making it right now for lunch.

    It sounds pretty good, but I’ll be honest when I first saw the photograph I thought it looked a bit like a can of paint :)

      Haha! Definitely not paint, but I’ll take that as a compliment. I’d drink and eat anything that is as vibrant as this delicious color of purple – does a body good :)

    I absolutely loved this smoothie (as did my two-year-old)!! It’s divine! I’m allergic to spinach (arrgh) so I used red kale as a replacement, and wow! This is a keeper! I’d never tried using basil in a smoothie, but I knew it was super healthy, so I Googled “basil green smoothie,” and your recipe was at the top. :) I’ve pinned this and will return to this recipe often. Thank you for the wonderful treat!
