Chocolate Cherry Bliss Bars

In my opinion Valentine’s Day get’s a pretty bad rap. It’s overrated, it’s a Hallmark holiday and it’s blah, blah, blah. But I don’t get what the big deal is. What’s so horrible about celebrating love, spreading love + feeling love in return?

For me, today is all about sharing as much love as I can. Starting with loving my husband, I’ll be loving him all day. Tonight we’ll eat some yummy food, drink good wine and go to the ballet. Yep, that is cliche but I don’t care. I just love him. And we love eating, drinking and experiencing the arts in our beautiful city and we own it like a boss.

But Valentine’s Day will always hold a special place in my heart because 29 years ago today, my precious little sister came into this world much earlier than expected and what a beautiful miracle it was. Krissie, I have protected and cherished you everyday since. Happy Birthday sweet girl, you are the most caring, loving, generous, creative and supportive sister in the whole freaking wide world. You’re my special cupid. You make me laugh, you make me cry and you constantly remind us all that love is the answer, today and everyday.

Look at those killer green eyes! Whoa, is she a looker or what people?

So to celebrate my sister’s birthday and just the general love all around us, I’ve created these delicious grain-free, vegan {sub maple syrup for honey}, paleo-friendly Chocolate Cherry Bliss Bars for us all to enjoy. They’re part brownie, part cookie, all parts delicious-awesomeness. Because, why not choose love. Now who’s with me?

Chocolate Cherry Bliss Bars with Sea Salt

Notes: be sure to line your baking sheet with parchment, these bliss bars will not come out otherwise! Makes 9 perfect, lovely little square; enjoy them with someone you love.


  • 1 1/4 cup almond meal or flour
  • 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon cacao or cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt + more for finishing
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup cherry preserves

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Combine all of the dry ingredients and whisk together vigorously to combine well. Next add in the wet ingredients and a firm yet sticky and wet cookie dough will form.

Line an 8 x 8 brownie pan with parchment paper and evenly distribute the cookie batter. The batter will be a little sticky, so take your time spreading this out evenly. Gently spread the preserves over the top and bake for 30 exactly minutes. Remove from the oven, finish with a pinch more sea salt over top, cool completely and serve.
