I’m not sure if it is innate or learned, or a combination of both, but I have a deep desire to care for others through food. I grew up in the kitchen. Teetering on chairs with large spoons in hand, wearing aprons far too big for my tiny frame. The foundation of my cooking skills were learned from the matriarchs in my Italian family. We never followed recipes – cooking with our hearts and tasting as we went along.
My childhood was spent roaming through upstate/western New York, and the St. Lawrence River Valley. After earning a BA in Sociology and Women’s Studies in 2005, I immediately moved to Denver. I needed to go west. I needed to be free. I stayed in Colorado for five years. I was young and restless. I worked in the service industry. I stayed up all night and slept all day. I took a lot of unnecessary risks. I didn’t care about the food I put in my body or my own well-being. For most of my twenties I stayed out of the kitchen, and struggled to stay well.
In 2010 I moved back to the east coast, to Philadelphia. I got married. Was diagnosed with celiac disease. Went through a radical lifestyle change. Continued my education, studied nutrition and became a Health Coach. I found my way back into the kitchen, and my health began to improve through a naturally gluten-free and largely plant-based diet. In 2013, I started With Food + Love to share my passion for wellness, food and drink, storytelling and photography.
I’m based in St. Louis. Here I create content and develop recipes for likeminded brands, host seasonally inspired pop-up dinners, work as a contributing photographer and columnist for FEAST Magazine and manage the marketing and art direction for the Retrailer Tea Co..
