I’m sorry I have been distant lately. It has been over a month since I last posted. I haven’t been very active on social media. And I’ve held back from sharing with you all that is happening in my life. But this summer – there has been a lot.
I’ve been doing all I can to keep my head afloat all while operating my dinner series, coping with stage four endometriosis and supporting my husband with his demanding, fluctuant career.
During this period of unknowns, I have been craving nourishing and grounding foods. Exploring the outdoors and seeking refuge by visiting my family and friends back on the East Coast. This week I’ll have a new recipe for you to blend the end of summer with the beginning of fall. And I’ll be sharing some pretty big news too.
But right now, I want to share with you a really special trip that I went on back in June. It was actually so special it ranks as one of my most favorite life experiences of all-time. One that grounded me to my core. My trip exploring Sitka, Alaska with Sitka Salmon Shares changed my life.
I knew I would love Alaska a lot.
But I didn’t expect to fall for it so hard.
To be so deeply, madly in love with Sitka, Alaska. Maybe it was because I was off-the-grid and forced to be on a very necessary digital detox for seventy-two hours.
Maybe it was the fresh, crisp air my lungs desperately needed to breathe. Maybe it was the unseasonably dry, sunny, warm weather we got to experience. Or maybe it was the mountains, constant shades of blue, soaring bald eagles, wild berries, abundance of fresh seafood, natural hot springs, sunsets that lasted into the middle of the night or the wonderful company I was blessed to share it with {hi Amanda, Marsh, Nicole and Audrea!}.
Whatever it was, exploring Sitka was an honor.
Alaska is wild. Alaska is humbling.
Sitka sits at a base of the usually fog covered glacial carved mountains on Baranof Island. Sitka is a fisherman’s town, and home to Sitka Salmon Shares. Sitka Salmon Shares is a completely integrated boat-to-doorstep seafood company. The concept they boast is a simple one. An honest one. One that I one-hundred percent stand behind.
Their passionate, small fleet of fishermen catch and deliver the fish to a small processing plant in Sitka. This is where they care for and package the fish to send to its members mainly located in the Midwest. You can define their product by their excellence, and their laser focus on quality and traceability and sustainability.
As I was paling around with the Salmon Sitka Shares folks for a few days exploring Sitka, I had the chance to also eat their catches cooked mainly over fire as it should be. Seasoned with local sea salt and foraged aromatics – I can’t remember a time I experienced such fresh, vibrant, simple foods. The freshest prawns, halibut, black cod and salmon that I have ever tasted in my life.
Sitka Salmon Shares changed the way I consume seafood. I thought I was doing it right before. Buying as sustainable fish as I could from grocers and distributors that I trusted. But I learned, I was doing it wrong. Now I’m a Sitka Salmon Shares consumer for life and I only eat the best fish for my body and the best fish for my planet.
You can enroll in your own Sitka Salmon Share by clicking this link and using code: SHERCASTELLANO to take $25 off your share.
They are currently offering their three month premium seafood share and their fall seafood sampler consisting of wild Alaskan coho salmon, sashimi-grade albacore tuna and jumbo spot prawns.

An experience I feel so grateful to have experienced with you. Your pictures bring back so many great memories! And remind me of what I would argue is the most wonderful seafood in the world. xo

These shots are truly gorgeous, Sherrie. I recently finished reading The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah, which took place in Alaska, and now I'm itching to go. I have been to beautiful places before, but there's something so raw about Alaska I think.

I cannot wait to go back to Alaska, and to Sitka in particular. What an extraordinary experience - to be off the grid for three days on an island in Alaska. Pure joy. Thank you for bringing us there with you. And I’m so grateful to know about the Salmon Shares program!

Well, that was worth the wait, especially if your health has improved. I’ll keep praying for that. Your photos are gorgeous. The food sounds deliriously delicious. Can we all go back with you? An excursion into the mountains would be a wonder to behold. I’m looking forward to any recipes you can show us. Thanks for the update and the pics.
